History of Tunica Academy
Read all about the interesting history about our beloved Tunica Academy.
Tunica Academy, formally known as Tunica Institute of Learning, was chartered as a Mississippi corporation on June 23, 1964. A group of prominent citizens had a vision to provide the students of Tunica County an alternative to public education.
The school opened in 1964 and operated a kindergarten in the local Presbyterian Church. By the 1966-67 school year, the school encompassed grades one through seven, and they were housed in a new building, called the Elementary Building, which still stands on the current site.
The enrollment continued to increase as grades were added each year. Accordingly, the physical plant took on additions. By the spring of 1970, the High School Building and Gymnasium had been completed, and the three buildings continue to make up the physical plant today. The institution held its first graduation in the spring of 1970.
With the ongoing support of parents, friends, and the community at large, Tunica Academy should continue to meet the needs of its students for years to come.
